Health Systems, Corporate Social Investment…
“Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time”
-Thomas A. Edison
Professor Lucy Gilson argues that new health interventions are not immediately accessible or affordable to individuals in low and middle-income countries, where poorer populations are always the last to attain access. Gilson believes that improving health depends on more than just new discoveries, but rather lies in the ability for health systems to absorb and disseminate its programmes widely and equally into communities. She further adds that the success of health innovations lies in the capability of health systems to devise appropriate policy guidelines, develop appropriate health programmes, motivate healthcare workers, and to deliver responsive and acceptable healthcare to individuals and communities.

As we continue with articles focusing on issues that are critical to the survival of non-governmental organisations (NGOs); corporate social investment (CSI), NGO financial sustainability, capacity building and fundraising, among others. Tracey Henry, chief executive officer (CEO) at Tshikululu Social Investments (TSI) takes a closer look at CSI and the key role it plays in changing people’s lives for the better.
Henry believes that: “As is the case with any for-profit business investing in new initiatives, it would be correct to say that not all social investment funding has yielded handsome dividends or changed the lives of people in a profound or positive way.” She also states that most welfare or charitable organisations are being marginalised by funders who feel constrained rather to support initiatives that are aligned to the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment codes, adding that South Africa will find it difficult to create real jobs that promote economic development if other spheres of development are neglected.
