Child Protection Week, Literacy…
"There can be no keener revelation of a society's soul than the way in which it treats its children."
In this week’s NGO Pulse, we look at Child Protection week which runs from 27 May to 3 June under the theme: “Let us protect all children to move South Africa forward”, we also look at Breakthrough to literacy which could be an effective tool in addressing the reading crisis faced nationally.
High proportions of the nation’s children are victimised by violence, this is according to a statistics report released in the South African Parliament. This report showed that at least 41 percent of all reported rape cases from the past three years involve children and in the same period, more than 2,600 children were murdered, thousands of babies are abandoned across the country which two out of three are reported to have died. Because of some of these cases, World Vision recommend that violence against children be treated as a national disaster.

In the recently released Progress in International Reading Literacy Study, South Africa was placed last out of 50 countries. It was found that a large number of South African children struggle to understand what they are reading, the study also found that eight out of 10 Grade four learners cannot read for meaning. It is said that if children can’t read, they can’t learn, so are more likely to be trapped in the scourge of poverty, hopelessness and unemployment.
Breakthrough to Literacy, a tool published by the Molteno Institute for Language and Literacy, is very powerful in teaching children to read with comprehension, the programme also develops children’s writing and listening skills, this method utilises as the basis for learning to read and write.
