Good Governance, South African NGO Movement…
The power of one, if fearless and focused, is formidable, but the power of many working together is better
In this week’s edition of NGO Pulse, we look at Good Governance in NPOs and revisit an article published earlier in the year about a call for the renewal of the South African Non-Government Organisation (NGO) sector pledge and activism.
“Good governance is the foundation of a successful NPO [non-profit organization]. Governance can make or break your organisation – if it is great you can fly, if it is poor you can fail. In NPOs, therefore, we should know as much as possible about the key features of our organisational governance,” writes Gabrielle Ritchie, founder and Director of The Change Room.
Governance is often a challenge for many NPOs as their main objective is public service, not financial gain. It is sometimes difficult to find board members with the necessary skills who are prepared to volunteer their time for free.

This call is the beginning of a long journey of re-uniting and revitalizing NGOs to reclaim their rightful place in the ongoing democratic project. The main strategic objective of this renewal process is to explore and initiate the revival and unification of the NGO sector to play its critical role of mediation between citizens and power holders and to ensure accountability through effective representation and campaigning and also to express the interest of citizens.
The gap created by the South African NGO Coalition (SANGOCO’s) organisational challenges and consequent weakening pushed the progressive unity and coordination of NGOs in particular and civil society. SANGOCO was established as a response to create a platform for social policy dialogue with a mission to strengthen civil society.
