NGO Movement, Funding, Forum…We continue with the call for the renewal of the South African NGO Movement and with the National Consultative Forum of NGO national sectors and network event coming to a close, in this week’s NGO Pulse Tshepo Legodi an NGO Development comments written by comments on the National NGO Movement. Legodi says that the Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) sector needs to be acknowledged as it is a key component of the societal development and that it is boasting approximately 100 000 registered NGOs and 50 000 non-registered. He further points out key fundamentals needed to keep the sector vigilant, he says for this sector to make an impactful contribution and to maintain its relevancy and sustainability, it must forge strong partnerships with the public and corporate sector, innovative funding models and viable resources mobilisation strategies. Some of her suggestions are that one needs to summarise their reports and to include analysis by going beyond just sharing information. She also states that making the most important information easy to find will make it easier for funders to understand your work, it will be easier for them to engage with you and help you. Asking for support can also be a challenging task, you need a summary of what you do and what you are asking for and have a clear plan of action with clear targets and budgets. Following a call by President Cyril Ramaphosa during his State of the Nation Address (SONA), he called on South Africans to re-set national development agenda, and that organised formations of our society must play their part. In this regards, he intends to convene a Social Sector/Civil Society Summit in the next three months as part of national dialogue to get South Africans engaged. Our challenge is that the NGO sector is the only civil society sector which is not organised and coordinated at the apex level to engage effectively with the national development agenda with one, united voice. Occupying this space require principled commitment, based on the sector’s time-tested values to work together for the good of society and in particular, our communities. Independent NGO movement building is urgent and important towards the creation of a supportive and conducive enabling environment for the sector to play its role for the national renewal and regeneration of a nation at work. However, an important question arises as to whether the NGO sector is ready and able to play its part. Despite a progressive and vital role played by the NGO sector in securing our democratic breakthrough in 1994, the post-1994 period has seen significant changes in the character and content of the NGO movement. A vibrant and vocal NGO movement remains vital for our democracy to mature and flourish. JOIN US AS WE MOVE TOWARDS THE RE-BUILDING AND RE-UNIFICATION OF THE NGO SECTOR TOWARDS THE REALISATION OF THE SOUTH AFRICA WE WANT! Activities to be noted are as follows:
