Women and Kidneys, NPO Governance, World NGO Day…World Kidney day is celebrated on 8 March 2018, with the theme Kidneys and Women’s Health: Include, Value, Empower. It is said the Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a worldwide public health problem with adverse outcomes of kidney failure and premature deaths and that it affects approximately 195 million women worldwide and is currently the 8th leading cause of death in women, with close to 600,000 deaths each year. CKD is more likely to develop in women compared with men, with an average of 14 percent prevalence in women and 12 percent in men. According to a report in the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, progression is slower in women compared to men and that psycho-socioeconomic barriers such as lower disease awareness can lead to late or no start of dialysis among women. Click here to read more. “Good governance is the foundation of a successful NPO [non-profit organization]. Governance can make or break your organisation – if it is great you can fly, if it is poor you can fail. In NPOs, therefore, we should know as much as possible about the key features of our organisational governance,” writes Gabrielle Ritchie, founder and Director of The Change Room. Governance is about how an organisation is led by its governing body such as a Board of Trustees and how this Board monitors the activities of the organisation and how it spends its money. It is often a challenge for many NPOs as their main objective is public service, not financial gain. It is sometimes difficult to find board members with the necessary skills who are prepared to volunteer their time for free. Click here to read more.
