Chris Hani Memorial, #NationalDayOfAction, Events…
“What I fear is that the liberators emerge as elitists, who drive around in Mercedes Benzes and use the resources of this country …to live in palaces and to gather riches.” – Chris Hani
24 years after his assassination, Chris Hani’s words are a biting truism for South Africa. Much like Frantz Fanon’s analysis in The Wretched of the Earth, Hani’s words have echoed from the past and have become South Africa’s reality.
During the Chris Hani Memorial Lecture, Finance minister, Malusi Gigaba, urged members of the African National Congress (ANC) to emulate the late South African Communist Party leader Chris Hani’s character by standing with the poor and defending them.
Many often ask: what would Chris Hani do if he were alive today? Arianna Lissoni, a researcher at the History Workshop, University of Witwatersrand, explores this question and what can be learnt through remembering Hani's legacy.

On Wednesday opposition parties gathered in Pretoria for the National Day of Action.
Leaders from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Democratic Alliance (DA), the United Democratic Movement (UDM), African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP)‚ African People’s Convention (APC)‚ Congress of the People (COPE) and Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) protested together proving that they are indeed stronger together than apart.
Thousands of people gathered in Church Square with one mission, to see the end of the Zuma administration.
In the article On President Zuma's Birthday Thousands March to The Union Buildings, Tshidi Madia quotes ANC Head of Communications, Khusela Sangoni saying that marchers are well within their constitutional rights to protest against Zuma.
"This is but one of the mechanisms in our society to deal with and resolve conflict. Others include the constitutional right to call for a motion of no confidence in the president of the republic, such as the one that shall be debated next week," she said.
"We are of the view that there should never be any need for anyone to be alarmist but rather appreciate our maturing and strengthening democracy which allows us to ventilate our differing views and opinions on issues of the day.”
