Cyber Security, Obesity, PC…
In this week’s edition of NGO Pulse, we look at the month of October which is National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM), an annual campaign to raise awareness about cybersecurity run by the National Cyber Security Alliance and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
We live in a world that is more connected than before, the Internet touches almost all aspects of everyone’s daily life, whether we realise it or not. People are now accustomed to online banking, buying items from Internet retailers and are active participants in the social media arena, however, all these are internet platforms and are prone to cyber-attacks whereby hackers can access personal information of individuals and exploit this for personal gain.
NCSAM is designed to engage and educate public and private sector partners through events and initiatives to raise awareness about cybersecurity, to provide them with tools and resources needed to stay safe online, and to increase the resiliency of the nation in the event of a cyber-incident.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa (HSF), together with the World Obesity Federation, calls for decisive action from government, private sector and parents with the fight against obesity in children. “Being overweight as an infant increases the risk of being overweight as a child, which in turn increases the risk of being overweight as an adolescent and adult”, writes HSF. The organisation also states that children are most vulnerable to this environment of corpulence. From the Birth to Twenty study in Soweto results recently showed that girls who were obese between the ages of 4 – 6 years, were 42 times more likely to be obese as teenagers compared to their normal-weight peers.
