Philanthropy, Freedom, #Storymakers2016…Philanthropy plays a critical role in addressing the socio-economic challenges faced by many in South Africa. This include the widening gap between the rich and the poor, increasing poverty and inequality, among others. Giving enables philanthropists to support programmes that are implemented by nonprofit organisations (NPOs) to address some of these challenges. In this week’s edition of NGO Pulse, we take a closer look at the partnership between the Southern Africa Trust and the University of the Witwatersrand’s Business School as well as its significance to African Philanthropy. The Southern Africa Trust's executive manager and head of the Policy & Programme Unit, McBride Nkhalamba, says that the partnership, which led to the establishment of the Chair in African Philanthropy, was necessitated by the need to generate scientific knowledge needed to define and/or create the paradigm of African Philanthropy. Nkhalamba argues that the Chair in African Philanthropy serves as an authority on how philanthropy is defined by the organisation and what it represents to it. He notes that the other objective has to do with employing the knowledge accrued to influence legislation and policy, as a way of creating a much more enabling environment for African Philanthropy. President Jacob Zuma, speaking during the official Freedom Day celebrations in Giyani, Limpopo, reminded South Africans that freedom was fought for and that many lives were lost for its attainment. Zuma urged South Africans to unite and not allow anything to threaten the freedom and democracy that “we fought so hard for.” He acknowledged that the country has achieved a lot since 1994, adding that while services are extended to some communities, “many others are still waiting because the backlog resulting from apartheid exclusion is extensive.” Click here to read the full speech.
