CSI, Accountability, United Nations…
Welcome to the first edition of NGO Pulse for 2013.
This year will once again present the NGO sector with many challenges and opportunities and as usual, NGO Pulse will be at the forefront of highlighting critical issues and disseminating important news and information relevant to the sector.
With more than 43 000 subscribers to the weekly NGO Pulse e-newsletter, and more than 12 000 registered NGO Pulse Portal users, we reach a significant number of NGOs and other development stakeholders on an ongoing basis.
We therefore invite NGO Pulse readers to continue contributing news and information about their work to the NGO Pulse portal and weekly e-newsletter.

In our first article, Reana Rossouw, founder of Next Generation Consultants, takes a closer look at corporate social investment (CSI) and the importance of measuring the impact of CSI-funded development interventions. Rossouw is of the view that the lack of measuring prevents organisations from comparing and benchmarking investments to other investments they had made and this has led to a situation in which organisations cannot prioritise the most substantial investments and cut out what she describes as ‘dead wood’.

In a related development, Koketso Moeti, a regular contributor to NGO Pulse, urges NGOs not exclude the beneficiaries of their work in the quest to be transparent and accountable. Moeti believes that apart from the need to ‘walk the talk’, there is a need for the nonprofit sector to transform from being an industry that decides what is best for the poor and vulnerable to something that allows people to reclaim their dignity.

In another article, Lesley Masters, senior researcher at the Institute for Global Dialogue, takes a critical look at the United Nations and the need for this institution to transform itself in order to remain a relevant player in global governance issues. Masters echoes the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Maite Nkoana-Mashabane’s sentiments that not since 1963 has there been any reform of the United Nations Security Council when the number of non-permanent members was increased from 6 to 10, adding that it is now nearly 50 years ago. “While there may currently be some reprieve for the UN, its future will become increasingly uncertain without significant reform,” he argues.

The start of a new year is a good time for NGOs to review their technology needs and requirements. We encourage NGOs in South Africa, Botswana and Kenya to visit the SANGOTeCH, SANGOTeCH Botswana and TechSoup Kenya technology donation platforms for great savings on technology purchases.
SANGONeT also provides NGOs with various services to enhance their external communication. We specifically encourage NGOs and NGO Pulse readers to use our NGO Pulse Premium e-Advertising Service when communicating with other NGOs and development stakeholders in SA.
