ContentsQuote of the week"South Africa is on a disastrous course. As we withdraw our support for civil society, we risk becoming a country unable to care for the people, and if a country cannot care for and respect its most marginalised citizens, how can it call itself a civilised society?"
- Catherine Wijnberg, Director, Fetola.
Comment of the week"Whether intentional or not, the proposed policy changes to the socio-economic development element creates uncertainty and risk for the NGO sector and will without a doubt be the final blow for many of the charitable institutions in South Africa."
- Hilda du Toit, Marketing Manager, Abraham Kriel Childcare.

B-BBEE Codes, 16 Days, Eskom, Education…The proposed amendments by the Department of Trade of Industry to the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) codes could have serious implications for the financial sustainability of many non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in South Africa. The revised Code of Good Practice states that only companies that donate to NGOs with 100 percent black beneficiaries will qualify for full points on the socio-economic development element of the Code. South Africa commemorates the annual 16 Days of No Violence Against Women and Children under the theme ‘Peace Begins at Home’ from 25 November to 10 December 2012. In the next three editions of NGO Pulse we will be featuring articles focusing on various challenges faced by women and children. Click here for more information. As usual, we encourage NGO Pulse readers to continue contributing news and information about their work to the NGO Pulse portal and weekly e-newsletter.
