<> EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR´S COMMENTS

Welcome to the 35th edition of SANGONeT´s monthly e-newsletter!

In response to much demand and interest from various NGO and development stakeholders, SANGONeT is pleased to announce the re-introduction of the PRODDER Directory in book format.

The new PRODDDER directory presents South African NGOs, as well as funders and other development stakeholders, with a number of interesting options to profile their work and take advantage of SANGONeT´s multimedia approach to civil society communication.

Refer to http://www.prodder.org.za for more information.

Published from 1987-2001 by the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), the PRODDER Directory established itself as the most comprehensive development publication of its kind in Africa, and became a much sought-after reference tool on the Southern African development situation.

In 2005 SANGONeT launched PRODDER as an Internet-based information service, attracting more than 3 000 unique visitors per month. PRODDER is an integral part of the SANGONeT NGO Portal, the most comprehensive information resource about the NGO and development sector in South Africa.

The printed directory will complement SANGONeT´s online approach to disseminating NGO and development information and expose a wider audience to our work.

SANGONeT will release the new PRODDER publication on 24 October 2007 to coincide with World Development Information Day (WDID).

I would also like to encourage NGOs to register for the 2007 SANGONeT "ICTs for Civil Society" Conference, as well as enter the South African NGO Web Awards 2007. Three NGOs will win prizes to the value of R10 000 each. The closing date for entries is 31 May 2007.

Refer to http://www.sangonet.org.za/conference2007 for detailed information about the SANGONeT Conference and NGO Web Awards.

As always, we are very interested in how you think we could best serve the NGO sector with relevant ICT products and services. Please send us your views, comments and suggestions.

Best wishes

David Barnard (dbarnard@sangonet.org.za)

<> CIVIL SOCIETY INFORMATION (CSI) PROGRAMME

# SANGONeT NGO Portal

April was an important month on South Africa´s calendar as the country celebrated 13 years of freedom under a non-racial democratic government. We took the opportunity to reflect on important issues that have far reaching implications for the growth and sustainability of our nation in relation to transformation and development.

We carried a thought provoking article about black economic empowerment within civil society which is advocating that beneficiaries of NGO programmes, who tend largely to be black, should be appointed to preside on the governing bodies of NGOs.

Moreover, to commemorate Freedom Day, our opinion piece reflected on South Africa´s journey to maturity and in this article, Idasa´s Paul Graham charges that South Africa is not adequately protecting the rights of all her citizens.

In addition, through our monthly poll, we examined the role of the media as a key player in promoting a progressive agenda in development policy and found that many voters believe that the media has a positive influence on progressive development policy.

The results of the poll, which was taken by 130 voters, are as follow:

o I strongly agree - 47.8%
o I agree - 22.4%
o I disagree - 21.1%
o I strongly disagree - 8.7%

As always, the CSI team continued to produce relevant civil society and development-related content for the portal. The editor´s choice of articles produced during April 2007 includes the following:

(Please note that we are no longer using short urls as they constitute a security risk)

NGO Profile: Gender Links

Feature: The Lotteries & Non-Profits

Resource: 23 Sins of Non-Profit Management

Resource: 13 Habits of Highly Effective Leaders

Feature: Civil Society and Black Economic Empowerment

Opinion: South Africa - Teenager on the Road to Maturity

# PRODDER: The South African NGO and Development Directory

As part of the preparations for the book version of the PRODDER Directory, as highlighted in the editorial, all entries in the directory will be updated in the next few months and transferred to a new open source web-based platform.

Refer to http://www.prodder.org.za.

While the new online PRODDER platform is being finalised, the current public interface will be frozen. All electronic updates and new listings will only appear when the new application is launched on World Development Information Day (WDID) on 24 October 2007. We apologise for any inconvenience in this regard.

The PRODDER team is also finalising appropriate processes to assist student researchers with access to PRODDER data. We will keep you posted  on these developments.
