Welcome to the 34th edition of SANGONeT´s monthly e-newsletter!
The development of technology solutions and services dedicated to the
work of the NGO sector is a growing and expanding international field of
operation.
During the past week I attended the annual Nonprofit Technology
Conference (NTC) in Washington, DC. Organised by the Nonprofit
Technology Enterprise Network (N-Ten), this event was attended by more
than 1 000 representatives from the nonprofit sector actively involved
in supporting nonprofit organisations in the United States and other
parts of the world with technology solutions and services to achieve
their missions.
I have attended the NTC for the past few years as it provides a
strategic opportunity to gain insight into new developments in the
nonprofit technology field that might be of relevance to SANGONeT’s work
in support of the NGO sector in Southern Africa. The NTC is a very
unique event, with very few similar events held anywhere else in the
world in support of the nonprofit sector.
SANGONeT’s decision to introduce its annual “ICTs for Civil Society”
Conference and Exhibition in 2005 was informed by the success of the
NTC, as well as the lack of attention given to the ICT needs and
experiences of the NGO sector during traditional ICT conferences.
The 2007 SANGONeT conference will be held from 17-18 July 2007 at the
Wanderers Club in Illovo, Johannesburg. The theme of this year’s event
is “Applications for the Development Sector”.

Furthermore, the winners of the South African NGO Web Awards 2007 will
be announced at the gala dinner on 17 July 2007. Detailed information
about the competition and the entry requirements are available on the
conference website. Three NGOs will win prizes to the value of R10 000 each.
This competition aims to raise awareness amongst South African NGOs
about the benefits of having a web presence, stimulate interest in the
application of web solutions and applications, and showcase best
practices in website creation and maintenance.
As always, we are very interested in how you think we could best serve

# SANGONeT NGO Portal
The past month witnessed the launch of the Hivos/SANGONeT civic
journalism project. This three-year project, supported by the European
Union, aims to build the digital and media capacity of targeted civil
society organisations in Zambia, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Tanzania, Mozambique
and South Africa working in the areas of human rights, gender, HIV/AIDS
and youth development.
A major highlight of the past month was an exclusive opinion piece
written for the portal by Advocate Tseliso Thipanyane, CEO of the South
African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC). The article reflected on the
attainment of social justice in the ten years since South Africa’s Bill
of Rights came into effect, and was written to commemorate South African
Human Rights Day, which this year also marked the 10th anniversary of

In the wake of the annual budget speech and the President’s State of the
Nation Address, the CSI team used the March 2007 poll to test
perceptions in response to the following statement - “The State of the
Nation Address & Budget Speech sets SA on the right path for the year
ahead.”
The results of the poll, which was taken by 120 voters, are as follow:
Yes, absolutely: 58.3%
Yes, to a limited degree: 15.8%
Yes, to a large degree: 14.2%
I don't know: 6.7%
Not really: 4.2%
Not at all: 0.8%

SANGONeT continues to house the most up-to-date online directory of NGOs
and development agencies in the form of PRODDER, and we invite you to
list your organisation on this free and searchable database.

In addition, the Foundation for Human Rights' Human Rights Directory,
developed in conjunction with PRODDER, is now available.

As part of our involvement in the implementation of the Dimitra project,
we will be participating in the Women's Tent Forum at the World Congress
of Rural Women, to be held from 21-25 April 2007 in Durban. SANGONeT

African countries.

SN-Announce is an e-mail advertising service that provides an invaluable
service to the NGO sector in Southern Africa. With a potential readership
of more than 10 000 people, it remains one of the most cost-effective and
efficient ways to reach NGOs, development practitioners, grantmakers and
others working in the development sector.

type of information distributed covers vacancies, events, new
publications, funding opportunities, tenders and services for the

# SANGOTeCH Online Technology Donations Portal
Several new Microsoft products became available via SANGOTeCH at the end
of March 2007. These include Forms Server 2007, a standalone server
that uses server-based electronic forms to streamline organisational
processes, as well as the updated Sharepoint Server 2007.
In the four months since the launch of the programme, SANGOTeCH has
distributed software and hardware to the value of R4 million to more
than 40 South African NGOs at a cost of less than R180 000; a saving to
the sector of
over R3.8 million.
South African NGOs interested in ordering software available on
SANGOTeCH should first check their general eligibility for the programme

# NADCAO Web Portal and E-mail Accounts
SANGONeT is providing technology assistance in the form of a web portal
and e-mail accounts for the newly formed National Alliance for the
Development of Community Advice Offices (NADCAO). The web portal
features multiple threaded user forums, a searchable directory of advice
offices, interactive calendar, a files repository and an online Help
Desk section. In addition, it carries several dynamic newsfeeds that are
created using Rich Site Syndication (RSS) technology.
The portal is driven by a content management system (CMS) which
facilitates the organisation, control and publication of a large body of
documents and other content. The CMS also facilitates sign-out and
collaborative creation of articles and documents. Articles can be
programmed to be published on a certain date and unpublished on another
date. In addition, SANGONeT is setting up 100 e-mail accounts and a Help
Desk for NADCAO members.
# CCMS Training
Seven advice offices affiliated to the Karoo Centre for Human Rights
have received end-user training in using the Central Case Management
System (CCMS). The training focussed on using the CCMS as an online
application for inputting and managing case records. The training was
delivered by Ungana-Afrika and funded by the C S Mott Foundation.

# Rural Women’s Movement (RWM) Training
SANGONeT's Systems Administrator, Mzwakhe Makhalemele, conducted a basic
computer training course for 13 members of the RWM in the Bushmans River
valley in rural KwaZulu-Natal. To complement the 20 computers donated by
MTN, SANGONeT donated and installed networking equipment. The three-day
training course covered Windows XP, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint,
Internet and e-mail.

# Thetha - The SANGONeT ICT Discussion Forum
The first South African Thetha forum of 2007 will be held on 17 May 2007
at the Axiz Auditorium in Midrand. The event will focus on the issue of

Economic Research Consortium workshop on "ICT Policy and Economic
Development in Africa" from 12-13 March 2007 in Kampala, Uganda. He also
attended the African Civil Society Forum from 22-24 March 2007 in Addis
Ababa, Ethiopia.
# SANGONeT’s CSI Manager, Fazila Farouk, attended the “Living on the
Margins” conference, organised by the Isandla Institute, PLAAS and the
Chronic Poverty Center, from 26-28 March 2007 at the Spier Estate near
Stellenbosch.
# SANGONeT’s Information Coordinator, Butjwana Seokoma, attended a
seminar organised by the Human Rights Institute of South Africa (HURISA)
and the Freedom of Expression Institute (FXI) which focused on the “Role
of the Police (both SAPS and Johannesburg Metro Police) in the
implementation of the Regulation of the Gatherings Act (RGA), 205 of
1993,” on 27 March 2007 in Parktown.
# SANGONeT’s Information Coordinator, Badumile Duma, attended a meeting
on “Women and Land Rights” organised by Planact on 29 March 2007 in
Braamfontein.
