Quote of the week
Freedom of expression - in particular, freedom of the press - guarantees popular participation in the decisions and actions of government, and popular participation is the essence of our democracy.
- Corazon Aquino, Political Leader, former President of Philippines.
Comment of the week
Most people would agree that we want an editorially independent, accountable publically funded broadcaster broadcasting robust, probing journalism reflecting a diversity of views – and that we need a broadcaster that supports and promotes a feisty independent production sector nurturing South African creativity.
- Kate Skinner and Professor Tawana Kupe, SOS Campaign.

Press Freedom, Post-Elections, Broadband Campaign...
It is two weeks since we voted in South Africa’s fourth elections. The euphoria has died down, T-shirts and flags have been packed away and, according to Independent Online, parties that have missed the 14 day period in which they could remove their election posters now face being fined. As we prepare for the inauguration of our new president on Saturday, focus now shifts to ‘what next’ – what will the new cabinet look like and how will the new ministries operate?
In this week’s edition of NGO Pulse we republish an elections brief produced by Idasa’s Political Information & Monitoring Service Programme in which they outline the immediate trends visible in the national and provincial results. “As expected, the ANC has once again been delivered an emphatic mandate to govern, winning 65.9% of the national vote and a majority in eight of the nine provinces. Now that the votes have been tallied, it is clear that there have been several key changes in South Africa’s political landscape.” Click here to read the full article.
Writing about World Press Freedom Day which takes place on 3 May every year, SANGONeT’s information coordinator Butjwana Seokoma asks if a truly free press exists anywhere in the world. He reflects on the state of press freedom in Southern Africa and highlights examples from countries which clearly show that freedom of the press must be guarded at all costs. “We should not forget that many journalists, bloggers and reporters continue to pay the price for investigating and filing reports on issues that put their lives at risk, so that we, the public are kept informed,” he writes.
