Salaries, Staff retention, Sex worker conference…
Every day we are confronted by signs of the financial crisis that is causing havoc in economies across the world. Fluctuating fuel prices, high food costs, massive retrenchments and businesses closing down have become commonplace. The NGO sector has not been left unscathed. Echoing the prediction made by Ann Bown , an article published in The Times earlier this week warns that NGOs are in for a “rough two years”.
These financial difficulties have compounded the existing challenges of retaining skilled and senior staff in the NGO sector. In an article titled “Staff retention, salaries and inflation”, Averile Ryder offers some suggestions for retaining staff. Linking pay to performance, implementing specialist career ladders and allowing for more flexibility in pay and work practices are some of the strategies that NGOs can consider. Drawing on the findings of the recently released 2008 NPO Salary Survey, she writes that “Finding a good balance between total rewards programmes, salaries and benefits will ... ultimately position the organisation as an “employer-of-choice.” Click here to read the full article.
We also publish an article on the upcoming African Sex Worker Conference. The first of its kind, the conference – taking place in Johannesburg from 3-5 February – will explore the ways in which sex workers can organise themselves: why it is important to unite and collectivise; how to find safe spaces for sex workers to assemble; and how to manage national, regional, and global sex worker-led movements. We are pleased to share a few blogs posted by NGO Pulse users. Prince Nare writes that “human behaviour is not always rational behaviour” as he offers his views on behaviour change and HIV and AIDS. Blogger, ‘ajohanm’ calls on South African’s to take a “responsible interest” in the upcoming elections while David Kapp continues to keep us entertained and informed as he reflects on the recent statement made about a member of a political party who says that women cannot wear pants in a meeting with traditional leaders.
What do you think of the blog posts? Let us know by registering as a NGO Pulse user and posting your comments directly.
As always your comments and ideas are welcome.
