Quote of the week

I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent.

- Mahatma Gandhi.

Comment of the week

Erstwhile blood brothers have become sworn enemies threatening, accusing and even assaulting one another. The promise of a better life for all has vanished like mist before the sun and has been replaced by an intense fight for political survival.

- Christo van der Rheede.

Domestic Violence, Media Monitoring, Politics…

This week’s edition of the NGO Pulse newsletter continues to focus on the 16 Days of No Violence Against Women and Children. SANGONeT programme assistant, Nicolle Beeby, reports on the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation “South African Domestic Violence Act: Lessons from a Decade of Legislation and Implementation” conference which took place from 26-28 November 2008 in Johannesburg. She writes that after 10 years of implementing the legislation, survivors of domestic violence continue to experience secondary victimisation. Click here to read the full article.

The link between gender violence and HIV/AIDS has always been emphasised during the 16 Days of Activism. The commemoration of World AIDS Day on 1 December provides the opportunity for us to reflect on how, as activists in the gender and women’s rights and HIV sectors, we respond to these epidemics.

In its latest commentary series, titled “HIV/AIDS: are we winning this war?” the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Industrial Organisational & Labour Studies Research Unit, explores some of the not so often spoken about issues related to HIV and AIDS such as food prices and it impact on HIV; consumerism and the spread of HIV; access to treatment/ARVs in the collapse state of Zimbabwe, Africa's military as atypical workers and their struggles with HIV; abstinence vs contraceptives and issues pertaining to stigma. Click here for the full publication.

In another article, SANGONeT information coordinator, Butjwana Seokoma, reports on the 15th anniversary and website launch of Media Monitoring Africa (MMA), formerly known as the Media Monitoring Project. He congratulates the MMA on its website and brand. Click here to read his article.

In his article, Christo van der Rheede, Executive Officer of the Stigting vir Bemagtiging deur Afrikaans, writes that the promise of a better life for all has vanished like mist before the sun and has been replaced by an intense fight for political survival. “The time has come for South African politicians to practice the politics of joy and hope. This requires hard work, as lasting solutions for issues such as housing, service delivery, unemployment and crime can only be found when they apply their minds and not their hearts”, he writes.
