Xenophobia, Disaster Management, Blogs
In this week’s edition of the NGO Pulse newsletter, we return to the xenophobic attacks in South Africa which took place earlier this year. While the temporary safety sites have been shut down, the consequences of the violence continue to be felt. Consortium for Refugees and Migrants in South Africa advocacy officer, Sicel’mpilo Shange-Butane, writes that a number of reports released after the attacks conclude that factors such as poor service delivery and competition for resources contributed to the attacks. She cautions that the absence of a government-led workable reintegration plan means that civil society is left with the burden of assisting those who are still struggling to find their feet after the attacks. Butjwana Seokoma, SANGONeT’s information coordinator, reports on the recent devastating storm that left many houses without roofs in the Maruleng area, east of the Limpopo Province. He writes that the Anti Privatisation Forum (APF) is concerned about the quality of the RDP houses in South Africa. The APF has called for the creation of housing forums to enable municipalities and NGOs to discuss service delivery challenges at local government level. The storm, writes Seokoma, highlights the need for municipalities to have disaster management plans in place so that communities receive assistance immediately. Click here to read the full article.
The debates and discussions we feature through NGO Pulse reflect the concerns and challenges of civil society in South Africa. We want NGO Pulse to be a vibrant space where you can air your views and discuss issues of common interest. We have provided the platform, but it is up to you to use it. Regular blogger Niloc wants to know why there is so little interaction by users on the site. He asks: "Why then don't we say something? We have much to say, don’t we? We ask for platforms to share our learning, we ask for spaces to ‘speak our minds’, we demand the right to engage in issues that impact on us. Then we fall quiet.” Click here to read the full blog.
We look forward to hearing what you think about our new look.
