Feminist Technology Exchange, e-Waste, ICTs for Rural Communities
In this week’s edition of the NGO Pulse newsletter, we highlight the Feminist Practices of Technology Exchange (FTX) which ends in Cape Town today. The FTX brings together women’s rights activists to harness the creative and strategic use of video, audio, social networking platforms, digital storytelling, mobile phones and community wireless networks for women’s transformation, activism, advocacy and movement building. NGO Pulse editor Janine Moolman is attending FTX and conducting digital story training. Click here for more information on FTX.
The 11th International Forum on Women’s Rights and Development (AWID) is also taking place in Cape Town from 11-14 November, immediately after the FTX training. Women’s rights leaders and activists from around the world will gather to strategise, network, celebrate and learn in a highly charged atmosphere that fosters deep discussions and sustained personal and professional growth. AWID believes that when people struggle together, what was once unimaginable becomes possible; this also serves as the forum’s call to action. Click here for more information on AWID.
Butjwana Seokoma, SANGONeT’s information coordinator reports on the recent e-Waste Association of South Africa (eWASA) conference which he attended in Johannesburg. He writes that the conference provided a platform to discuss the successes and lessons learnt by eWASA while implementing electronic waste management systems. He quotes a caution from Keith Anderson of eWASA who says: “Africa is becoming a dumping ground for America and Europe under the guise of donations.” Click here to read his article.
In another article we look at the P.E.A.C.E. Foundation. P.E.A.C.E. stands for Planning, Education, Agriculture, Community and Environment, each word providing a key factor and channel for the integrated, holistic and sustainable processes of development. In an effort to provide access to information, P.E.A.C.E. has partnered with Vuvuzela Communications which has developed a software solution that enables beneficiaries to interact with information communication technologies (ICTs) at P.E.A.C.E. Information Centres (PICs). In rolling out PICs, rural communities are provided with access to ICTs and are empowered to make informed choices and decisions regarding their socio-economic development.
