President Jacob Zuma has announced a major overhaul of government, appointing powerful figures to key posts charged with overseeing and improving South Africa's limping public services.

One day after his swearing in, Zuma announced a restructured Cabinet including minority party members and leftist allies, establishing a powerful planning commission which will be headed by former finance minister Trevor Manuel.

Zuma says the strategic planning body will enable the government to take a more comprehensive view of socio-economic development in the country.
