The World Health Organisation (WHO) puts the number of deaths from the cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe at 3 000.
WHO spokesperson Fadela Chaib, points out that the cholera situationis not under control, but out of control, and it will remain so for the near future. Chaib states that "We're seeing the worst-case scenario of 60 000 [cases] within reach."
In its last update, the organisation says a total of 3 028 people are now known to have died from the water-borne disease while 57 702 have been affected. It also estimates that about half of Zimbabwe's 12 million people are at risk from cholera because of poor living conditions.
