Mamphela Ramphele has slammed the African National Congress (ANC) and its youth league leaders for their arrogance, greed and inability to live their lives with integrity.
Discussing ‘Integrity in Public Life’ at this year’s annual Helen Suzman memorial lecture, Ramphele, praised Suzman for her considerable role in ending apartheid, and how she was able to do so with integrity.
Ramphele slammed remarks by deputy police minister, Fikile Mbalula, who called former education minister and ANC veteran, Kader Asmal, a ‘raving lunatic’. She also criticised the Free State ANC youth league chairperson, Thebe Meeko, for saying the shoot-to-kill approach must also apply to all the racists, including the University of Free State vice-chancellor, Jonathan Jansen, because he is a racist.
Ramphela says the ANC youth leaders do not represent the future leaders of this country and there is much to be done to ensure the new democracy is characterised by integrity in public life.
