Producers of red meat have criticised the Minister of Agriculture and Land Affairs, Lulu Xingwana’s proposal to scrap value added tax (VAT) on poultry meat products.
Red Meat Industry Forum Chairperson, Dave Ford, who believes that states that the move could lead to the demise of the red meat industry in South Africa. Ford notes that the industry will take whatever action necessary to protect itself, including litigation, if the government presses on with what he called a discriminatory approach to zero-rating basic foods.
He further warns that the people who will be the hardest hit by what will amount to a 14% reduction in the value of their herds will be small herders in the poorest rural areas.
