WHO Warns of Return of Child Killer Polio

WHO warns that polio has re-emerged as a public health emergency, following new cases in Syria and Pakistan

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned that polio has re-emerged as a public health emergency - new cases have surfaced in and spread across the borders of Syria and Pakistan, among other countries.

WHO assistant director-general, Bruce Aylward, points out that, "The conditions for [declaring] a public health emergency of international concern have been met," following crisis talks on the virus long thought to be nearly extinct in Geneva.

Between January and last month - usually considered the low season for polio transmission - three new importations of the virus were detected: from Pakistan to Afghanistan, Syria to Iraq, and Cameroon to Equatorial Guinea.
