UNAIDS Criticises India’s Homosexuality Law
Friday, November 21, 2008 - 12:59
The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) has warned that an Indian law criminalising sex between men is a "major obstacle" to the country's efforts to curb the spread of HIV and AIDS.
UNAIDS executive director, Peter Piot, has described the law as a “violation of human rights”, adding that it should have been abolished a long time ago.
In addition, Piot further says that the law could "pose a problem for public health preparedness" by hurting the efforts of HIV and AIDS workers and advocates.
