UN to Boost Education in Africa
Monday, November 23, 2009 - 18:46
The United Nations has vowed to urgently tackle problems of teacher shortages, adult illiteracy and low pupil enrolment at schools on the African continent over the next year.
New director-general of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), Irina Bokova, says that assisting Africa will be her top priority.
Bokova, who said Africa is lagging behind when it comes to the millennium development goals in education, argued that, “"Africa is a priority in education, science, gender equality and culture. We think that Africa and, especially countries in sub-Saharan Africa, are the most vulnerable and need the most assistance."
