SAHRC Threatens to take FBJ to Court for Excluding White Journalists

Sowetan, 10 April 2008.

The SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has threatened to take the Forum of Black journalists (FBJ) to the Equality Court if the media body does not review its membership policy.

Last week, the SAHRC ruled that the FBJ policy that excludes whites from its membership amount to unfair discrimination and is, therefore, against the Constitution.

SAHRC Chief Executive Officer, Tseliso Thipanyane, noted that the FBJ has the right to approach the Constitutional Court on the matter.

FBJ Chairperson, Abbey Makoe, on the other hand, argued that his organisation was found guilty of being black and of having the uppity presumption of wanting to address the injustices of the past that continue to thrive to this date.
