SA Making Progress in Gender Equality

Minister in the Presidency, Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, says that South Africa has soared from 17th place to third position in the global ranking of women in Parliament following the April 22 elections.

“Our country is now only behind Rwanda at 56 percent and Sweden at 47 percent," she said. Tshabalala-Msimang points out that this achievement tranlates to an 11 percent increase in the national assembly’s representations from 34 to 45 percent.

“This is a remarkable feat for women in Parliament, in 1994 we stood at 27% and 15 years later, we stand at 45%,” Tshabalala-Msimang said.
