One Billion People Could Go Hungry – FAO
Monday, May 11, 2009 - 10:42
The United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) says that the number of hungry people in the world could soon hit a record one billion, despite a recent drop in food prices.
FAO general director, Jacques Diouf, points out that the recent financial crisis, though it has helped bring global food prices down, has also led to falling trade and lower development aid.
The number of people considered hungry increased last year by 40 million, and in 2007 as well, when 75 million more people joined the ranks, explains Diouf.
