The head of Age-in-Action, a national non-profit organisation, which receives money from the Lotto and the Department of Social Development, has been suspended pending the outcome of an internal investigation into the alleged misappropriation of funds.
CEO Martha Mokholo was suspended on September 10.
Confirming Mokholo's suspension, Age-in-Action chairman John Phillips said in a statement: "It is alleged that certain transactions have taken place without the appropriate level of authority being granted. We have engaged our independent auditors to investigate these transactions, who should be reporting back to us within the next two weeks."
Age-in-Action protects and promotes the interests of the aged. On its website, the organisation says it represents "more than 2.7 million older people" and has more than 800 NGOs as members.
