Norway says it is giving US$9 million in immediate aid to the people of Zimbabwe to help support the troubled African country

Norway says it is giving US$9 million in immediate aid to the people of Zimbabwe to help support the troubled African country and its prime minister, Morgan Tsvangirai.

Norwegian Aid Minister, Erik Solheim, says, “Zimbabwe has looked deep into the abyss but has decided to climb out of it. If the new government can function, Zimbabwe can be an example of avoiding the failure of a state.”

The oil-rich Nordic country cut off direct aid to President Robert Mugabe’s government in 2000 to protest his “misrule” but continued aid through the United Nations and other organisations.

The aid package is going mainly to health, education, food and World Bank development projects, and not the Zimbabwe state.
