NGOs Outraged by Assault on Young Woman
Sowetan, 19 February 2008.
The assault on Nwabisa Ngcukana, a young woman who was sexually at the Noord Street taxi in Johannesburg, has sparked outrage among human rights organisation, who have called for the perpetrators to be brought to book.
Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation’s (CSVR) Lisa Vetten, has been quoted as saying the only thing that could end this ‘barbaric practice’ will be for Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Firoz Cachalia to intervene.
In the same vein, Tshwaranang Legal Advocacy Centre (TLAC) said it will help Ngcukana to lay criminal charges against the taxi drivers. TLAC’s Liesel Gerntholtz stated that it is disturbing that there are men who still think that women should not wear certain clothes.
The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), Spokesperson, Vincent Moaga, notes that, “The Commission, together with the Commission on Gender Equality and other relevant stakeholders, will use its power to ensure that there is justice for the victim and that the perpetrators of this despicable behaviour face the full might of the law.”
