NGOs Key to Job Creation – Patel

NGOs have the potential to create more than a quarter of a million new jobs in South Africa, says Patel

The Minister of Economic Development, Ebrahim Patel, says non-governmental organisations have the potential to create more than a quarter of a million new jobs in South Africa.

Speaking at the start of the Social Enterprise World Forum conference at the University of Johannesburg, Patel said NGOs in Europe have managed to increase the number of people they employ from about two million to five million people over the last 10 years.

He says there is scope for growth in job creation by this sector in South Africa, adding that, "International experience points to the central role that the social economy in employment creation, in social cohesion and service delivery."
