Nedbank and Vodacom have launched M-PESA in South Africa.

M-PESA is a mobile money solution enabling even unbanked customers to transfer money from person to person using a cell phone. It was originally created as a pilot funded jointly by Vodafone and the UK Department for International Development (DFID) Financial Deepening Challenge Fund. Since then, the service has proved immensely successful in the Kenya, Tanzania and Afghanistan markets with more than 10 million customers.

The introduction of M-PESA follows on two related announcements of last week, namely FNB's partnership with PayPal, as well as Standard Bank's link with Spar to offer customers instant access to money.
