Teachers unions in KwaZulu-Natal say that the trial exams have shown that most matriculants in the province are not prepared for the new curriculum finals.

The National Professional Teachers' Organisation of South Africaconducted a snap survey after the trials, questioning teacher training in the new curriculum and whether pupils were coping with the standard of the national exams.

The South African Democratic Teachers' Union (SADTU) concedes that the education department did not adequately train teachers. SADTU says it has conducted its own training workshops in that province since February to bring teachers up to speed.
