The Land Claims Commission faces a R10 billion debt
The Land Claims Commission could not afford to pay about R8.8 billion in grants for post-settlement support to beneficiaries of the land restitution programme.

The Commission, which is tasked with restoring to blacks land that was taken from them during apartheid, is also unable to R1.19 billion for land it bought because of a shortage of funds.

Business Day reports that the Commission still has to pay land owners who went to court to force it to pay R380 million for land it purchased from them. The newspaper further reports that the government had turned down the commission's request for an additional R10.3 billion for restitution over the next three years.
