Land Bank Recovering, More Cash Needed
Monday, November 24, 2008 - 11:35
Acting land claims commissioner Blessing Mphela has admitted that mistakes had been made in setting up partnerships between private sector operators and restitution beneficiaries.
Responding to the provisional liquidation of a major strategic farming partner, South African Farm Management, Mphela points out that investigation of problems with strategic partnerships had begun, particularly in Limpopo and Mpumalanga. He says the investigations will focus on allegations of poor financial disclosure and the way strategic partners had been appointed.
In a similar vein, AgriSA president Johannes Moller says his organisation had suggested a different model that will see partnerships between commercial farming neighbours and land-claim beneficiary communities. Moller argues that several such partnerships had been mooted to the land claims commissioners and the department, but had been ignored.
