Increasing Circumcision SA’s Challenge

The increase in male medical circumcision services should go hand in hand with a plan to maintain quality, argue researchers

Researchers believe the increase in male medical circumcision services should go hand in hand with a plan to maintain quality.

In a study published in the open access journal of PLOS Medicine journal, the researchers found that as South Africa vastly expands male medical circumcision services since 2010, surgical efficiency and record-keeping improved but the quality of surgical care, such as tracking complications, declined.

The study was conducted by the Centre for HIV and AIDS Prevention Studies (CHAPS) and the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health.
