IEC Needs Proof of Missing Voters
Tuesday, February 10, 2009 - 09:08
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says it is disturbed by reports that voters belonging to certain political parties were purged from the voters’ roll.
IEC chairperson, Brigalia Bam, has urged parties affected to submit evidence of such irregularities to them.
“We want to reassure all the citizens that party affiliation has never been a consideration for registering as a voter. “We once again remind all political parties that it is their responsibility to create a climate conducive to the conduct of free and fair elections,” Bam.
The comments come shortly after the Inkatha Freedom Party accused the IEC of deliberately removing its members from the voters roll, mainly in its strongholds.
