ICRC Warns Troops on Women and Children Rights
Tuesday, January 27, 2009 - 15:20
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has warned all sides involved in fighting in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) that they are legally bound to spare civilians, especially children and women.
In a press statement on the ongoing military operation in the eastern province of Nord-Kivu, the ICRC reminded all parties that they are obliged by international humanitarian law to preserve the lives of civilians and the wounded.
It says that: “Children enjoy particular protection and must be respected. One aspect of this is that it is illegal to recruit them into armed forces or armed groups, or to have them take part in hostilities."
The warning comes at the time when Congolese and Rwandan troops are carrying out a joint operation against Rwandan Hutu rebels, pushing northwards in DRC’s Virunga National Park area.
