ICRC Distributes Food Aid to the Displaced

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) says it has distributed food aid to more than 17 000 frightened and exhausted people forced to flee fighting in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In a press statement, ICRC points out that the fighting has seen thousands of men, women and children arrive in recent weeks amid fierce clashes between rebels and government troops.

ICRC’s relief coordinator in the DRC, Ian Byram, argues that: "The people arriving have lost everything, and often have to spend the first few nights in churches or schools.” Byram further says that, “They are completely exhausted after walking several days in search of safety."
