HRC to Investigate Phiyega Over Marikana Massacre
The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has confirmed that it will probe national police commissioner, Riah Phiyega, for the Marikana massacre, which left 34 people dead and scores of others injured.
SAHRC spokesperson, Isaac Mangena, points out that the commission receieved a complaint from a Cape Town-based NGO, to investigate the conduct of the police during the Lonmin strike in Marikana, as it infringed the miners’ right to life.
Mangena says the SAHRC will attend to this complaint as it will with any complaint they received.
