Gender Links Speaks Out on Gender Parity
Gender Links says gender parity is still low in top government and parliamentary structures, although president Jacob Zuma has tried to include women in his administration.
Gender Links points out that, “The 50/50 principle has not been carried to the highest levels of government as South Africa no longer has a woman deputy president.”
It notes that 14 out of 34 new ministers announced by Zuma, 41 percent are women. Under Thabo Mbeki, the figure was 42 percent and under former president Kgalema Motlanthe it was 43 percent.
In the same vein, the organisation singled out Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Helen Zille’s all-male Western Cape legislature for criticism. It argues that despite being led by a woman, the DA remains averse to quotas.
