Dept Violates Human Rights, Court Rules

The High Court in Pretoria has ruled that the Basic Education Department’s failure to provide textbooks for several Limpopo schools is unlawful.

In passing the judgement on the application by SECTION27, the public-interest law centre, former chairperson of the South African Human Rights Commission, Judge Jody Kollapen, ordered the department devise a catch-up plan to remedy the consequences of its delay in supplying teaching material.

In the same vein, SECTION27 director, Mark Heywood, describes Kollapen’s judgement as ‘a watershed ruling’, adding that the ruling will not only have implications for Limpopo, but other provinces will learn from it as well."
