DAG Slams HRW Allegations of Aid Abuse
Monday, November 1, 2010 - 09:26
The Development Assistance Group (DAG) has responded to a report on Ethiopia by Human Rights Watch (HRW), saying that it does not concur with its assessment and conclusion that development aid is being used to political ends.
The DAG, which comprises 26 bilateral and multilateral development agencies providing assistance to Ethiopia, says that, “We do not concur with the conclusions of the recent HRW report regarding widespread, systematic abuse of development aid in Ethiopia.”
The DAG further states that its own study did not generate any evidence of systematic or widespread distortion. It maintains that, “We, nonetheless, recognise that the programmes we support are not immune to the potential for aid misuse and have therefore included safeguard measures to address these risks.”
