ConCourt Likely to Reject the Bill – De Klerk
Friday, August 27, 2010 - 15:29
Former President F.W. de Klerk says it is unlikely the Constitutional Court will approve the Protection of Information Bill in its current form.
In a wide-ranging interview published in Die Burger newspaper, De Klerk says the elements of federalism in the Constitution - freedom of the media, free market economy and the independence of the judiciary, are in danger.
He says all ‘balanced South Africans’ who value democracy have reason to be very concerned, adding that, “If there has ever been a good time for civil society to join the debate on these four matters, it is now. The framework offered by the Constitution provides some protection.”
