Thursday, November 6, 2008 - 09:46

Residents of Secunda and Embalenhle in Mpumalanga have marched to Sasol's synthetic fuel plant in Secunda, to demand that the company clean up its alleged pollution and begin to employ local people.

Environmental organisation, GroundWork spokesperson, Siziwe Khanyile, points out that: "We are expecting large numbers of people because a number of buses were organised for residents.

Khanyile says that communities are calling on Sasol to empower emerging local contractors. She further states that the march is a joint venture by GroundWork and communities affected by Sasol.

In a similar vein, Khanyile, commends church leaders, traditional leaders and environmentalists for participating in the march. She says they have given Sasol seven days to respond to their demands.
