There is a ‘clear and present danger’ that the Copenhagen climate change negotiations are being set up to fail, argues Essop
There is a "clear and present danger" that the Copenhagen climate change negotiations are being set up to fail by the leaders of the rich countries backed by powerful vested interests. This is according to Tasneem Essop of the World Wide Fund for Nature’s international climate policy advocate.

In her submission to Parliament's public hearings on climate change, the former Western Cape MEC for environment and economic development, said negotiators from world governments and NGOs had worked for two years to lay the basis for an effective, fair and binding climate change agreement in time for the negotiations next month.

Essop says among others, NGOs want a 40 percent reduction in emissions from the rich countries to ensure the global temperature increase is kept below two degrees Celsius. She further says that NGOs want emissions to peak by 2017.
