Call to Protect the Constitution

Justice Minister, Jeff Radebe, has called on progressive lawyers to step up to the plate to protect the constitution

Justice Minister, Jeff Radebe, has called on progressive lawyers to step up to the plate to protect the constitution, saying this role had been ‘usurped by unexplained forces whose silence during apartheid was deafening’.

Speaking at the annual general meeting of the National Association of Democratic Lawyers (NADEL) at the weekend, Radebe, who did not name the forces, said there is an ‘unbridled rush’ to create ‘my own non-governmental organisation’, adding that these organisations have the sole intention of finding fault with the state.

He further said that forces that never saw the need to raise their voices during apartheid have now found their voices to protect the interest of the minority moneyed class and super rich.
