Call for ASA to Come Clean on Semenya
Friday, November 13, 2009 - 16:00
The Commission for Gender Equality urges individuals at Athletics South Africa (ASA) to confess their involvement in the Caster Semenya saga.
CGE spokesperson, Javu Baloyi, states that, "Although an apology is warranted under the circumstances, the central issue, however, is Ms Semenya who has suffered an enormous amount of public humiliation and trauma."
Baloyi says that, "The suspension of the ASA board and the sudden apology by the entire board should not be seen as vindication or as way of covering up for those at the wrong end of this debacle."
The CGE says is of the view that the International Athletics Association Federation (IAAF) has significantly infringed Semenya's rights and called on South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) to extend their engagement to the IAAF on this matter and for SASCOC to avoid a public spat between itself and ASA.
