Ban Condemns Boycotting UN Conference
Monday, April 20, 2009 - 15:35
The United Nations (UN) secretary-general, Ban Ki-Moon, says he is "profoundly disappointed" at the decision by some Western countries to boycott the UN review conference while all forms of racism persist.
Ban points out that, "We speak of finding a new unity as times demand. Yet we remain weak and divided and stuck in old ways.
Ban who expresses his unhappiness about mutual recriminations and absent countries, argues that, "Some nations who by rights should be helping us to forge a path to a better future are not here. Outside these halls, interest groups of many political and ideological stripes shout against one another in acrimony."
He further condemns those who might deny or minimise the ahead of a scheduled speech by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
