ANC Urged to Remove MAT from its Agenda

The Professional Journalists Association of South Africa urges the African National Congress to remove its proposed media appeals tribunal from the agenda

The Professional Journalists Association of South Africa (Projourn) has urged the African National Congress (ANC) to remove its proposed media appeals tribunal (MAT) from the agenda.

Projourn spokesperson, Samantha Perry, points out that, “While Projourn believes there is room to... strengthen the mechanisms through which the print media regulates itself, impetus for self-improvement should not come from the ANC, but rather from within the media itself.”

Projourn, which supports the calls made by City Press editor, Ferial Haffajee, and Wits University Professor, Anton Harber, to do away with the MAT, criticises the ANC is taking on the privately owned media but doing nothing about the broadcast and community media.
